2021 Review of Human Rights and Good Governance in Equatorial Guinea

The workshop will try to evaluate from the experts’ point of view how the situation of human rights and good governance in 2021 has evolved either positively or negatively. The experts will also analyze the key events during the year and give their assessment, in addition to analyzing the prospects for the year 2022.

The aim of this round table is to feature this experts’ analysis in the annual report on Human Rights and good governance that will be published by APROFORT.

Part 1: Human Rights and Good Governance in 2021

The analysis will be around 3 main issues: death penalty where panellist will discuss about the likelihood of finally having the death penalty abolished in Equatorial Guinea; the key human rights developments such as the migrant situation in Malabo in the last month; the response to the 7 March explosions by the government or cases of harassment of activists or professionals.

On Good governance, the experts will discuss about the new anticorruption law approved by the parliament and its level of implementation in Equatorial Guinea and the loan from the International Monetary Fund approved in September.

These issues will be discussed analysing the role of key international partners, the CPLP, the UN, CEMAC, AU…

Part 2: Human Rights and Good Governance next year

The second part of the workshop will be used to asking about their opinion about next year ahead in terms of human rights and good governance. This will include asking them to foresee a key change that could bring about improvements.

The session will be conducted in Portuguese, Spanish and English, according to the preference of the participants. We will not have simultaneous translation, but the APROFORT team will arrange for translation when necessary.
